12 January 2002 - New Year's Borrel
The New Year's Borrel of 2002 was hosted by our President Gerard de Wit and family.
Their home was the setting for a relaxed and lively atmosphere, where all members
could enjoy their reunion in a most pleasant way and exchange their resolutions
for 2002.
19 January 2002 - 11th ADB Black Tie
Dinner And Dance
The yearly ADB Black Tie Dinner and Dance was held on 19 January. The evening was a resounding success notwithstanding a slightly lower turnout. Partly of the economic slowdown, but also because of the royal wedding black tie event.
February 2002 - Triptych on innovation
R & D in Singapore
Three speakers: Prof. Dr. Ir. Aarnout Brombacher, Chairman Quality of products
and processes TU Eindhoven & Scientific Director Design Technology Institute
Singapore. The second speaker was Prof. Arnoud de Meyer, Dean of the Asia Campus
of INSEAD The third speaker was Dr. Frans Carpay, Managing Director of Gintic
Institute of Manufacturing Technology. Each speaker got about 10 minutes to give
his view on the topic innovation in Singapore.
11 March 2002 - Annual General Meeting
The focus of this year's AGM was on the possible role and activities of the ADB.
The following subjects were discussed: Name of the ADB, Website, Composition of
the Board, Review of the membership numbers, Review of ADB activities, Company
visit and other related activities Black Tie Dinner and the Magazine
8 April 2002 - The lifting of the
Kursk
Smit Tak has lifted the famous Kursk. Hans van Rooij who lived in Singapore before and was a member of the ADB, is now worldwide director for salvage at Smit Salvage B.V. and was responsible for the lifting of the Kursk. He gave a presentation with pictures and animation video also.
13 May 2002 - "Chemistry of the Senses"

Throughout the years, people have become used to having "fresh" food readily
available. Food companies and their suppliers have come up with a myriad of solutions
to overcome the "issues" that threaten the shelf-life of food.
These solutions, which are to be found on the back of a food package in the ingredient list, are making the consumers more and more concerned. Words with negative connotations, such as chemicals, GMO, artificial etc, surround this topic.
Mathijs Boeren (Marketing Director Foods Asia Pacific of Quest International
/ ICI) gave some insights into the "Chemistry" behind the joys of eating and smelling.......
6 June 2002 - PSA Port visit by P&O
Nedlloyd
The visit was a presentation by PSA and a well organized tour over the port area.
Also a tour on the P&O Nedlloyd Kowloon, one of the biggest Dutch vessels
with home port Rotterdam, built in 1998.

8 July 2002 - The Asian Consumer:
A Snapshot of the Diversity & Similarities Across Asia
Jing Resari, Director Client Service of ACNielsen Research (Singapore) gave a
presentation about the Asian consumer behavior. The following type of questions
were addressed:
- How many households have a PC at home?
- How many people use the internet minimal twice a week?
- In what way differs the internet-use from a Chinese consumer to that from
a Malaysian consumer?
- What is the predicted growth of mobile-phone users across Asia?
ACNielsen is part of the Dutch based VNU company and is the world's leading
provider of market research, information and analysis to the consumer products
and services industries, as well as to government and social services.
Mr. Jing Resari gave an overview of the retail scenario – mainly how
they behave as shoppers (key habits and shopping trends and patterns). To further
complete the understanding, the media usage, inclusive of the Internet or online
behavior is critical to highlight similarities and differences across the markets.
8 August 2002 - ADB Summertime Networking
BBQ
The event was held at the Pasta Fresca Sea Sports Center at the East Coast. In
this picturesque setting at the sea some 65 members and spouses had a most enjoyable
evening. After the welcoming speech of our vice-president Arjen van Geuns everybody
searched for the BBQ that was not there. But there was a "BBQ-ed-mead-buffet"
and plenty of other filling foods available. The Pasta Fresca management was kind
enough to turn off the lights several times to let us enjoy the view of the illuminated
ships in the Singapore Strait !
9 September 2002 - Willem van Kemenade
- China Specialist
Mr. Willem van Kemenade talked about the relation between China & Taiwan and the consequences of this for doing business in China and Asia
After working as the China and Asia/Pacific correspondent for NRC Handelsblad
from 1977-1997 and authoring some books, Mr van Kemenade has been briefing government
organizations, boards of major banks and corporations on developments in China
and East Asia and has been teaching regularly as a visiting professor at the China
Europe International Business School in Shanghai, the EU-China Junior Managers
Training Program in Beijing and at cooperative projects with the Maastricht School
of Management in various Chinese cities.
He regularly writes for "The Washington Quarterly" on the evolution of a "Greater
China", i.e. the (economic) convergence and integration of Mainland-China, Hong
Kong and Taiwan and is a frequent speaker at international conferences concerning
China.
7 October 2002 - Shell Refinery visit
at Pulau Bukom
The visit consists of tour to the refinery on Pulau Bukom and a dinner a the Bukom Clubhouse. There was an introduction of Shell/Bukom and an video presentation by Mr. Tom de
Jong, Manufacturing Director of Shell Pulau Bukom Refinery After that there was a tour
of the refinery to see the various process plants, with a stopover at the Long Residue Catalytic Cracker Control Room
November 2002 - ADB Golf Tournament at the Keppel Club and Extra General Meeting to change the ADB name [not realized]
December 2002 - No meeting
